Energy Saving Trends for Industries

Industries across the globe and in India are trying to improve their energy efficiency but still, there are disparities between what could be done and what is being done. Here we have discussed a few energy saving trends across industries in India :

  1. The Parliament of India adopted energy efficiency law in 2001 known as the Energy Conservation Act. This law was enforced on 2002 that required heavy energy consumers (such as various industries) to take actions such as introducing energy consumption labels and performance standard for various electrical appliances. To implement the provisions mentioned in this law, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency was created.
  2. The per capita total energy consumption in India was low till 2012. The global average of per capita energy consumption in 2010 was 1.9 toe and1.2 toe in non-OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries. Compared to them, in India, per capita energy consumption was 0.6 toe.
  3. Building energy management systems or adopting energy efficient technologies in the industry sector is one of the most important measures in improving energy efficiency. This also helps in reducing the emission of greenhouse gas.
  4. In India, the average efficiency of the power generation system has reduced to 30% in 2010 compared to 36% in 1990. The reasons behind this deterioration are the development of nuclear power, reduction in the share of hydroelectricity and the ageing coal power plants. With the rise in gas-fired facilities which are ahead in terms of efficiency when compared to coal power plants, is also the reason behind the drop in the efficiency of the thermal power plants. The efficiency rate of the thermal power plants dropped to 28% in 2010 compared to 30% in 1990.
  5. Industrial energy consumption in India increased by 7% in 2010. This was supported by the high growth in the GDP of the nation since 2003. During 2010, the India witnessed an 8.5% growth in GDP since 2003. Moreover, the energy consumption of the industrial sector didn’t decline during the global economic crisis in 2009 and 2010.
  6. In regards to industrial energy consumption, the share of electricity consumption has increased at a rate of 5.8% per year since 1990. However, by 2010, this rate increased to 18% per year compared to 13% in 1990. Coal is one of the dominant fuels in a majority of the industries. The market share of coal decreased during 1996. It dropped to 34% in 1996 from 44% in 1990. However, since then, it remained stable till 2003 and afterwards, witnesses a growth on a yearly basis and reached 40% in 2010.
  7. Industries accounts for total 45% of the total electricity consumption of India (as of 2010). The total electricity consumption has increased at a rate of 7% per year since 2000 compared to the final energy consumption at the rate of 4% per year.

Hopefully, these facts will give you an insight into the energy efficiency trends in India in the last few years. If you want to buy energy management system for your plant, take at look at our product at https://www.mbcontrol.com/products/
